Cognition & Learning Difficulties

My child has cognition and learning difficulties.


What is it?

Students with learning difficulties have academic attainments which are significantly below those of their peers due to a slower rate of learning. They will have difficulty acquiring and applying basic literacy, numeracy and language skills.

           What does it look like?

           Children may have difficulties with:

Spelling and Reading

Writing and Number

Working memory

Learning and processing new information

They may also find it difficult to concentrate for longer periods of time

They may have ‘Specific Learning Difficulty’ such as Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Dyscalculia

Children may have diagnoses such as Down’s Syndrome or Global developmental delay.



What can Montgomery offer?

In liaison with class teachers and parents, the SENCo will support staff to provide the most appropriate level of support.

Universal Support for all children

  • Differentiation - teachers will adapt teaching and learning so that children can access the curriculum at their level

Short term interventions


A range of assessments are used to determine children’s starting points and monitor their progress.

Catch up reading
Catch Up is a structured one-to-one intervention for learners who find reading difficult.

It uses a book-based approach to support learners in their reading of a book so they activate both dimensions of reading – word recognition processes (including phonics) and language comprehension processes.


Precision Teaching/Pocket folders


A 1:1 teaching method used to accelerate progress particularly in word reading and spelling skills although it is also used to increase children's proficiency in number facts.


Colourful Semantics


An intervention to help children organise their sentences , develop language and vocabulary in addition to grammatical structure.



Hit Squad Reading


30 minutes per day of  reading support, with an adult. Reading and discussing books in order to develop reading confidence and comprehensions skills.


Direct instruction


An intervention used to support children with dyslexic tendencies which can be adapted for reading or spelling.

Teacher/TA target time


Bespoke teacher led interventions to meet identified needs of individual pupils.



Specialist provision

Pupil Support Services (PSS)


Pupil and School Support work with schools and other educational settings to help pupils with cognition and learning difficulties and other vulnerable groups progress and achieve to the best of their abilities.


Educational Psychologist


Educational Psychology provides professional psychological services for children. They use the expertise of psychological theory and research to develop an understanding of even the most complex situations, addressing a wide range of child and adolescent developmental issues, including special educational needs.


A personalised curriculum


Where children have significant learning difficulties, a personalised approach will be taken.

Exam Access arrangements


Access arrangements are made for children who needs adaptations so they can access tests.
